Turnpikes are state chartered toll roads. These roads were designed to ease travel as well a collect profit from the citizens in America. The profits from turnpikes were supposed to be used for road improvements; but roads still remained in poor condition. The idea of creating turnpikes was brilliant and should have been beneficial to the country; but, the turnpikes weren't monitored correctly and thus, only a few turnpikes made profit or improved the cost/speed of transportation.
